Artist

The German-Indian musician Keshav Purushotham went in 2013, during an artist residency organized by the Goethe Institute in his second home in South India (Chennai, Pondicherry, Auroville) on the search for his roots. This resulted in his debut album "Keshavara" which was released in 2016 through the label Papercup Records, run together with his partner Steddy. The great response to the album led to the formation of the ensemble KESHAVARA in 2017 which has since been seen at numerous performances including c/o Pop (Cologne), Philharmonie Essen (Presented by WDR Cosmo Radio), Staatstheater (Darmstadt), Altes Pfandhaus (Cologne). KESHAVARA were awarded the Pop NRW Prize in the category "Outstanding Artist" in 2020. On "Kabinett der Phantasie", Keshav Purushotham's second album and the first with his partner Niklas Schneider, you hear music to which you bend your limbs in slow motion, smoke a meerschaum pipe, drink heavily sweetened mocha and roll your eyes to the beat. An album for which the long overdue drawer "fantastic music" finally belongs to be carpentered. If only so that the sound doesn't have to be labeled "Exotic Spiritual Pop" or "Outernational Downbeat Psychedelia," which are accurate but far too unwieldy. Accompanying the album is the film of the same name, which weaves music, drama and dance into a vaudeville-inspired avant-garde spectacle in which Indian masks, stories of the gods, magical instruments and seductive dances whisk the audience away to fabulous places.
