Come, produce yourself

Come, produce yourself
- Finna and Daniela in talk about a feminist self-image on stages and in spaces

"Come on, let's get you produced, your beats are really wack" reads the very first lines on Finna's debut "Zartcore" - a reminder of one of her first encounters with major label producers in 2016. Six years later, this can still be translated into the following sobering figure: 3.4 percent. That's because the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative comes up with just a three-percent share of female producers in 2022, when evaluating 800 chart-relevant songs. Would you like another number? Zero. Since 1974, not a single female producer has received an award in the category "Best Producer, Non-Classical" at the Grammy Awards.
Yet the very question of who you share the studio with during an album production, or how autonomously you can create your own music, can be crucial for many female artists. "Music is about creating atmosphere, and it's always determined who feels comfortable in that atmosphere and who doesn't." Would some female artists sound different if their music was more often created entirely on their own, or else in exclusive collaboration with other women? In the joint talk, Finna and Daniela talk about representations on and off stages, their artistic careers, and the importance of the collective.
